Parker’s Deeper Look:

Parker is all over the place with music, but they tend to stick to the trends and whatever is coming out they will always give a try. Their taste in music varies from Pop rap to alternative rock, all the way to the world of groups of all different genres. They would say they have a “niche music taste” . Let’s see if that’s true. For this week we are pushing the line on niche music and going back to our roots, my roots of nostalgia. The selected songs are all songs that make me feel nostalgic and for most of them have music videos that I would watch on repeat on my mom’s computer.

I am not the biggest fan of Chris Brown, but I grew up with a Chris Brown obsessed cousin that swore he danced just like him. But because of that I got into a couple early songs of Chris Brown, one being Turn Up The Music. This music video was so intriguing at a young age and to be honest I haven’t watched it in forever. So, all I remember is flashing lights and Chris Brown dancing like crazy in a suit. Back to the music aspect though, the early 2010s beat is addicting and his voice brings waves of nostalgia for me.

This next one is the reason I should’ve been at Coachella. As Long As You Love Me by Justin Bieber. You will learn I am the biggest fan of this man. His music will always make me hyped up. Now As Long As You Love Me, speaks to me because as a crazy loyal person I will stick through with my person as long as they love me. It’s a romantic, yet cool concept for Justin Bieber to make a music video for too.

Dark Horse is an iconic song with an even more iconic music video. Katy Perry went all the way for her music videos and it’s admirable how her videos compliment the song so well. The chorus of the song just hooks you in and makes me feel unstoppable.

Yet another boyband moment, this week is One Direction. Midnight Memories? That exact vibe replicated in the music video, the boys capture the late night party vibe in a song and video perfectly. And who doesn’t love a boyband pop song? Don’t lie to yourself.

Bazzi truly needs more love, especially Sober. It is my favorite song by him and the meaning behind it just gets to me every time. Love is so strong that it sometimes breaks those boundaries we set up, and we fear will this love last forever without the substance powering it. He talks about the power of how alcohol alters your feelings and sometime when we are intoxicated or in a moment of an altered mindset, will it truly last? That is the question. To be honest, this song encapsulates the fear and anxiety of if the person you yearn for will feel the same no matter what.

Now a classic love story, Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello, and their collaboration on I Know What You Did Last Summer. If you know you know the lore between these two and the iconic moment that was when this song was released. Yet again another music video going platinum in my household.

Okay for my EDM and rave lovers, we have Latch by Disclosure featuring Sam Smith. This will always stand as a great nostalgia party song no matter the decade or time of day. If you played this back in the Victorian period, yes maybe they would panic and have a heart attack, but that just shows how crazy good it is, right? (Please take my dark humor as a joke).

Oh speaking of heart attacks, that’s our next song! Heart Attack by Demi Lovato was before its time and oh my god Demi’s rock version of it was a perfect upgrade. It seriously is though a fantastic song as pop thought, but it definitely did have that potential to be a rock song right off the bat. So glad that she decided to do a rock cover!

I wish we had more time to yap about these songs. I wish we had more than just 3 minutes…see what I did there, you know, because our next song is I Wish by Cher Lloyd. Okay enough with my corny introductions, but this was one of my favorite songs and music videos growing up. Cher Lloyd’s unique vocals and rasp is just addicting to listen to and the music video radiates that girl boss behavior that little me needed.

Lastly, Seventeen by Alessia Cara is my personal song since I was always wishing to be older and grow up for that independence, but then when it started to hit that fear of growing up hit. That is exactly what Seventeen is about: the fear of growing up and wishing to pause time. Now thinking about it, the song itself has that youthful nostalgia feel forever now because of the meaning behind it. I think that’s what Alessia Cara wanted her song to have, that impact on us listeners. Why am I always leaving the last song to be sad…ugh maybe next week we’ll leave with a hype song! Enjoy this week’s playlist!

Natalie’s Deeper Look

Starting off strong, we have Madwoman by Laufey! I have been listening to this song on repeat since it released last week, I am a huge Lauver and was so hype to see so many of my favorite celebs in this music video! I just love Laufey’s voice and everything about this song

Next we have two songs from my favorite band of all time, Boys Go To Jupiter! I have been obsessed with them for the past few years, and I just have to say that they are the coolest band ever. BGTJ is made up mainly of Jess Kantorowitz (vocals), Caleb Martin-Rosenthal (keys) and Luke Volkert (guitar), but are also supported by a jazz band, and sometimes a strings section, which is absolutely crazy to see live. Last Last Time was the first song of theirs that I listened to, back when it was first released, and I immediately fell in love. It was so catchy, and I knew that I just had to keep listening to this band. Virginia was such an experience, it was released the day I went to my first concert of theirs with some of my friends, and it was so amazing to scream out the lyrics while the band was doing crazy shenanigans on stage, and is probably now my favorite song of theirs. Virginia tells the story of a rising star in the form of a disco ballad  ghost story and the music video will melt your face off (literally).

Doing a full 180, another one of my favorite bands is The Crane Wives, and Black Hole Fantasy is one of my favorite songs from their most recent album, Beyond Beyond Beyond. I love all their music, especially their lyricism, and this song has been stuck in my head. The Crane Wives is a great folk band, and all of their songs just have so much energy and passion.

Paramore has been one of my favorite bands since probably middle school, and for good reason. If you haven’t heard Hayley Williams belt out a song, you haven’t truly lived. Recently, I’ve been listening to her newest solo project, Ego Death at a Bachelorette Party, and felt really nostalgic about the early Paramore era, and Decode and Ignorance have got to be my top songs of theirs.

I’ve been obsessed with ADELA since I heard about her on Dream Academy (the survival show that led to the creation of KATSEYE), and I’ve been waiting for her to blow up. Machine Girl is probably my favorite song of hers, because it is so catchy and a great criticism of all the people who hate her because of a critique she made on DA of a now KATSEYE member not showing up to practices. I love ADELA and am so excited for her next release, KGB!

Ever since I watched Heated Rivalry over Winter Break, I’ve been listening to the soundtrack on repeat, and My Moon My Man has got to be my go to song. I just love the vibe, and it’s a great song to have playing in the background while I craft or do homework.

I’m kinda a really big theater kid, and Frank Wildhorn has got to be one of my favorite composers. He has worked on so many great shows like Jekyll and Hyde, Bonnie and Clyde, The Count of Monte Cristo, and two of my favorites (as an anime fan), Death Note: The Musical (which I’m Ready comes from) and Your Lie in April, which was performed last year, directed by MattPatt. I’m Ready is such a fun song, and I love how it is staged as a pop concert in the middle of the musical.

2515 is such a great song, and by such a great band. I found Wasia Project through Will Gao being in Heartstopper, and have been in love with their songs. I think its so cool how they are a sibling duo making music together (my brother would never), and I just love the vibe of their songs.
